Who We Are:
Redeemer-Saint John's Lutheran Church
(sometimes abbreviated and called RSJ
Church) is a congregation of the
Metropolitan New York Synod of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Brief History:
As our name implies, we originally were two independent
congregations: Saint John's Lutheran Church and the
Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. In the
1960s and 1970s, many urban churches experienced
declining membership as families moved to the suburbs.
It was during this period that the two former congregations
began talks to merge into one. Those talks led to the
formation of Redeemer-Saint John's Lutheran Church on
June 1, 1975. However, even though we are a relatively
young congregation since the merger, the original Saint
John's Lutheran Church was founded in 1888 and the
former Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer was
founded in 1925. So, in one way or another, this
congregation and its predecessor parishes have had a
presence in the Dkyer Heights and Bay Ridge areas for
nearly 120 years.
